What is trauma-informed massage therapy?

In recent years the topic of trauma has swept into the public spotlight, and with best-sellers like The Body Keeps the Score, millions have started their healing journey and sought professional help.

But just what does “professional help” mean? Typically the advice is to see a licensed therapist for talk therapy such as Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT). Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR) and Psychodynamic therapy are other common suggestions.

Meanwhile it is often suggested to supplement the work with various other tools that go beyond typical talk therapy. That might look like yoga to help reconnect to the body, breathwork to manage stress and anxiety — and yes, massage therapy too, which can find where trauma is stored in the body and relieve tension while processing emotional buildup.

If you’re going that route, it’s important to find someone who is trauma-informed so that you feel safe and supported. For us at Sol Solace Studio that means:

  • Advanced therapists: Our therapists are trained in advanced bodywork modalities that target the nervous system and emotional buildup.

  • Informed consent: We communicate clearly to obtain consent before making contact with the body.

  • Safe supported environment: This is a place where you can feel safe to release and let go without judgment.

  • Meet the client where they are at: Whether you want a quiet session or want to vent, we got your back.
